Through this book, he shows that there is no universal American experience, but rather that the ability to benefit from a particular American experience is filtered through the mediated lens of one's socio-cultural affinity, and that different affinities have access to different expressions of power and resistance.

Written during the Trump presidency and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, Anger Is a Gift provides young readers with a lens to understand their own American experience and understand the various privileges (or vice versa) while providing a way to illuminate the experiences of others.

lack of mediation) are offered by interest groups. Moss is a gay black teenager living in West Oakland. He learns that the school has implemented strict security measures that allow the police officer assigned to the school to search lockers at random. Things quickly escalate at school when Shawna, a young transgender girl from Moss's English class, finds her medicine in her locker and is attacked by the police when she thinks it's drugs.

Students react angrily to this incident and the school responds by allowing the police department to install metal detectors at the entrance. Moss's friend Reg refuses to go through the scanner, fearing it will shake the pins placed in his leg after becoming dependent on crutches and a wheelchair in a car accident.

When an officer forces her to pass, magnets attach her to the sensor, which aggravates her wounds so much that she will likely never be able to walk again. Friends of Moss are eager to hold a meeting to address the incident. Moss reluctantly agrees, but is skeptical that it will succeed as he sees the movement to bring justice for his father to failure years ago.

However, she begins to warm to the idea and eventually suggests that the students go on a march to protest their treatment. Wanda helps them plan a big community meeting. Javier attends the meetings and he and Moss grow closer, despite fearing that Moss doesn't deserve love.

When the day comes, Moss and the others are horrified to see the riot police at the school; they realize that the administration must have been notified of the protest. Refusing to be intimidated, they continue their protest and the police respond harshly to the students, using a series of brutal weapons to control the crowd.

Javier and his friends sneak onto campus to support the protest, but tragedy strikes when a police officer named Daley shoots and kills Javier. Moss is devastated by reliving the trauma of her father's murder and struggles to come to terms with yet another devastating loss.

On the way to the murder, Moss began to realize that Esperanza, who attended a predominantly white school that was much better funded thanks to her rich white parents, didn't really understand the reality that her poorer, more marginalized friends faced. Things come to a head when Esperanza's mother reveals that she reported the protest to the principal, believing she was helping an idiot.

Moss blames Esperanza's mother and is angry with Esperanza herself. In a fit of rage, he rides his bike by himself and eventually chains himself to a flagpole outside a police building to protest Javier's murder. His protest soon caught the imagination of the people and hundreds of people joined him in solidarity.

The police responded with extreme violence, brutally beating protesters and accidentally killing a white girl with tear gas. Realizing the reality of police brutality, most of the protesters were arrested, including Moss, Wanda, and Esperanza. He apologizes for his ignorance and questions Moss' experience. Moss and Wanda were released and offered a formal apology, presumably as a PR ploy to make up for the negative press the police received after their treatment of the students, the murder of Javier, and especially the murder of a white person during a protest.

At the press conference the next day, Daley is there and simply apologizes for killing Javier, hoping for forgiveness. Moss, Wanda, and Javier's mother reject her apology and refuse to activate a system that allows police to continue killing people of color with impunity.
