Months after shopping for groceries, Della has been saving money. She feels sad and anxious because, despite her best efforts, she has not saved enough. She hoped to use her savings to buy Jim something special for Christmas. Della starts crying on the couch when she realizes that she doesn't have enough money to buy Jim a Christmas present.
Deeper Study
When she stopped crying, Della wiped her face and looked out the window thoughtfully. She suddenly saw herself reflected in the dark mirror on the wall and had an idea. She let her long brown hair fall and gazed at him for a moment. Known for her beauty, Della's hair was her most prized possession.
She put on an old coat and a hat and went to a hairdresser's. The owner, Mrs. Sofronie, agrees to have Della's hair cut and buys it. Della spends the rest of the day wandering the city looking for the perfect gift for Jim. Her most prized possession is a gold pocket watch, which has been passed down through the generations in her family.
She wanted to buy him a beautiful chain to go with it, something special and rare. Finally, she found the perfect platinum necklace. She cost him all the money she earned from selling her hair, plus most of her savings. Della came home very excited to give Jim a present.
When Della got home, she did her best to style her new hair. She was worried that Jim would get mad and stop thinking that she was pretty. Jim had a strange look on her face when he saw that Della had cut her hair.
