About 150,000 people died in the December 26, 2004 tsunami in Banda Aceh. Some parts of the city were permanently submerged. Many aid agencies are present to help rebuild afterwards. The long conflict between the Acehnese Independence Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian Army (TNI) was at this time resolved with a peace agreement on August 15, 2005.
Since then the peace process has been very smooth. In 2006 the province held its first direct and democratic local elections. In 2007, the first democratically elected governor, Irwandi Yusuf, was installed. Banda Aceh has a subtropical rainforest climate with an almost constant average temperature.
The average annual temperature of the city is 27 °C. However, the city experiences both wet and dry seasons, with June to August being the driest months of the year. Banda Aceh does not have a true dry season month, with an average rainfall of less than 60 mm.
By Bus[Edit]
On an average, the city receives only 2000 mm of rainfall per year. Foreigners no longer need a Travel Permit (Surat Jalan) to enter overseas, but an Indonesian visa is required. It is possible to obtain a 30-day visa-on-arrival at Banda Aceh airport. The embassy in Kuala Lumpur can sometimes process the visa on the same day if you complete all the paperwork before noon, however this only applies to Malaysian residents.

There are non-stop night buses with journey time between 9-13 hours - from Medan to beyond Banda. Major bus companies like PMTOH, Pelangi, Kurnia and Pusaka have offices on Jl. Gajah Mada, Medana. Prices range from Rp 110,000 in a normal size seat bus to Rp 200,000 in a wide seat bus.
Minibuses can take you from the Medan area to beyond Banda, but the journey is usually longer. Prices are slightly cheaper than coaches. It is also possible to travel beyond Banda from Medan via Kutakane and Takengan. It will be 20 hours in total. Airlines fly daily between Banda Aceh and Medan, a 1-hour trip, Jakarta, a 2-hour-40-minute trip, or Singapore, about 4 hours.
No more bus service to the airport. The only way into the city is by airport taxi, which is fixed at Rp 100,000 (2019). There is a taxi counter on the left as you exit the arrival gate. Visa formalities at this airport are similar to other Indonesian immigration gates.

The nearest major (international) ferry port is Belawan Port near Medan. It receives ships originating from Batam, Indonesia (a common route when coming from Singapore). The ferry from Penang no longer operates. From Ulhee-Lee, Banda Aceh port you can go to Pulau Weh and Pulau Aceh.
Becak (motorcycle taxis) and labi-labi (public minibus) are the main ways to get around. The sudden influx of money after the Tsunami had made locals accustomed to charging higher rates, but now stability has returned. Examples of Becak fares: Airport - Grand Mosque: Rp 40,000;

At the height of the post-tsunami relief effort there were 850 NGOs, but many of these were non-Muslim religious groups and their licenses were not extended by the Indonesian government. In the center of town there are interesting fish, meat and vegetable markets.
There are also some small souvenir shops selling various local items. The Hermes Palace complex is located in the center of the city beyond Banda. The center has over 100 outlets including a food court, supermarket and clothing stores. An Acehnese breakfast staple is nasi gurih, rice cooked in coconut milk, sold in coffee shops everywhere.
Padang food stalls and restaurants are open throughout the unspoiled part of town and fruit carts are ubiquitous. Along JL Tengku Iskandar on the western outskirts of the city, there are nice coffee houses with relaxing views of the rice paddies around Uli Kareng. Three fast food chain restaurants A&W, KFC and Pizza Hut can be found in the center.

Like all things traveling with common sense and a good attitude, all you have to do is get going in this small town. But there are some points to keep in mind. Although today Banda is safer than most European cities, it is still best not to go out alone after 22:00.
By Boat[Edit]
Since Sharia law is enforced, drinking alcohol is not allowed, although it is still possible. Violations of locally perceived interpretations of Sharia law can lead to corporal punishment by Sharia police and arrest by public mocking of guilty Muslims. Muslim women are generally required to wear a headscarf in public areas.
Western style swimwear is only recommended in Sabang. Pick pocketing is rare but be careful and aware in crowded areas. I was living in Australia for a while and I decided to get up and travel. I ended up in Indonesia looking for waves with a friend.
We mostly stayed close to town, going to the beach every day. At some point, I wanted a bag and went to a street vendor.
