Adler Planetarium Gift Shop - Chicago's Museum Campus is the perfect place to visit multiple museums in one day, and the Adler Planetarium offers families the opportunity to leave the world on the shores of Lake Michigan. Like its siblings The Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium, it features exhibits that appeal to all members of the family and offers plenty of interactive learning opportunities.

Adler Planetarium Gift Shop
It opened in 1930 as part of the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere and has become a destination for families who want to learn more about the stars, planets, galaxies and space exploration. A great advantage of the Adler Planetarium is that most, if not all, of the building's exhibits do not require a full day to visit.
If you have kids who are tolerant enough, we recommend going to the Shed Aquarium early on Wednesday and the Planetarium at 4pm. It's free for Illinois residents from 4 to 8 p.m. until closing. On Wednesday, and you can stay in the same parking lot all day.
We visited at the beginning of the summer with our 5 and 7 year olds, and while one child was determined to be an astronaut, the other was happy to be in a museum. Everyone enjoyed different things about the museum based on their level of education.
Planet Explorers
Here's what we love about Adler Planetarium with kids! Save money on Chicago's best attractions with the Go City Card Little astronauts can have fun at this interactive exhibit designed to show kids their journey from home to another planet. My five year old loved all the manipulatives that showed how things on our earth come from energy from the sun and how we can see other planets in the night sky.

The exhibit then shows the preparations that astronauts go through before boarding a shuttle for space exploration: dressing, preparing for proper safety procedures, and equipping themselves. Kids can pilot a pretend rocket that launches into space, control a robotic arm that propels the ship, and buckle up to take a space nap or (pretend) use the space toilet.
Once they reach "Planet X", they can pilot a rover and build a shelter. This exhibit doesn't require much reading, and children above third grade will probably find it too easy. Perfect for aspiring astronauts ages 3-8 who love action but don't need facts and figures.
Combining astronomy and history, this was probably my favorite exhibit as a seven-year-old. The families of NASA Capt. James A. He can follow Lovell as he grows from a teenager who wants to one day work for NASA as an Apollo 13 crew member. Communication and operation with many switches and phones.
Mission Moon
The Mission Moon exhibit has lots of fun photo ops: kids can pretend they've landed on the moon and wear the actual moon rock and uniform worn by Lovell on the Apollo missions. An interactive map shows children how astronauts might navigate the lunar surface.
Adults can spend the day in this large open room with models of planets hanging from the ceiling and videos exploring each one. You can also touch a piece of Martian rock, make your own crater with a high-powered meteorite launcher, and learn how researchers study oceanic meteorites.

The graphics and detail are amazing and the exhibit reminds you of everything you forgot about elementary school science class. Our kids didn't have the attention span to stay with this exhibit for long, but it will be right up the alley for middle schoolers with a STEM background.
How was the way people thought about the Earth and its location in space different from people today? Children can learn how the study of astronomy is involved by seeing examples of sundials, telescopes, and even a sun hat from different cultures and eras. Use a telescope to get three kids together to see planet patterns around the room, learn how to tell time with shadows, and see what you can actually see with the Hubble Telescope.
Our Solar System
One of our kids' favorite parts of the exhibit was the medieval university classroom, where kids can dress up and sit on benches or teacher's chairs to review books about what astronomy was like hundreds of years ago. Bringing a local flavor to the cosmos, this exhibit shows what the stars look like in and around Chicago.Kids can create their own constellations in the night sky as part of the exhibit.
Another shows families how different colors of light can cause more or less light pollution, giving them a different view of the stars by looking at dioramas of street scenes. Be sure to visit the Community Star Studio using mixed media to illustrate what the Chicago night sky looks like for you.
If you want to feel small, visit this exhibition. It shows how vast the universe is by examining various galaxies and explaining how far away they are and how we see or know they are there. See how the elements of your body are the same as the elements of a star.

You will see how the universe has expanded over the last 13.7 billion years. The illustrations are impressive, but the concepts may be abstract for children under 10. While at the planetarium we took the time to see a show. One World, One Sky uses characters to show children the basics of the cosmos (how the Earth rotates, what causes sunrises and sunsets, and the constellations) and how people in different countries see the same night sky as we do.
Astronomy In Culture And Telescopes: Through The Looking Glass
