Adidas Discount Gift Card - It was 2004, the day after Christmas, and thousands of European and American tourists had flocked to the beaches of Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia to escape the winter cold in a tropical paradise. At 07:59 a.m., a 9.1-magnitude earthquake, one of the largest ever recorded, tore through an underwater fault in the Indian Ocean and pushed a huge column of water back toward the coast, out of nowhere.

The Boxing Day tsunami would have been the deadliest tsunami in recorded history, killing 230,000 people in just a few hours. The city of Banda Aceh, in the northern tip of Sumatra, was the closest to the epicenter of the powerful earthquake, and the first waves arrived in just 20 minutes.
It's almost impossible to imagine the 100-meter rippling mountain of water that engulfed the coastal city of 320,000 and instantly killed more than 100,000 men, women and children. Buildings, trees and cars, which doubled as paper houses, were swept away by the oil-black streams, and almost no survivors were caught in the flood.
Thailand was next. With waves traveling at 500 mph in the Indian Ocean, the tsunami hit the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket an hour and a half later. Although accelerated, residents and tourists were caught completely unaware of the impending destruction. Curious beachgoers swam through the strange crashing waves, chasing a wall of turbulent water.

The death toll in Thailand has reached approximately 5,400, of which 2,000 are foreign tourists. An hour later, on the opposite side of the Indian Ocean, waves hit India's southeast coast near the city of Chennai, pushing debris-clogged waters for miles and killing more than 10,000 people, mostly women and children.

The men were fishing. But some of the worst devastation occurred in the island nation of Sri Lanka, where more than 30,000 people were swept away by the waves and hundreds of thousands left homeless. In a testament to the tsunami's record power, the last victims of the Boxing Day disaster died nearly eight hours later, 8,000 miles from the quake's epicenter, in South Africa when rising seas and rogue waves caught bathers by surprise.
Vasily Titov is a tsunami researcher and forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Tsunami Research Center. He attributes the relentless destructiveness of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to the raw power of the earthquake that spawned it. The earthquake was caused by the megathrust fault, where heavy oceanic plates plunged under lighter continental plates.
These are the biggest faults in the world, and they're all underwater," says Titov. The 2004 earthquake shattered a 900-mile area along the Indian and Australian plates 31 miles below the ocean floor. Instead of a violent jolt, the earthquake lasted 10 relentless minutes and released the suppressed force of several thousand atomic bombs.

America The Story of Us is an epic 12-hour television event that tells the extraordinary story of how America was invented. In the process, large sections of the ocean floor were forced up about 30 to 40 meters (up to 130 feet). The effect was like dropping the world's largest pebble into the Indian Ocean in mountain-sized waves that spread in all directions.
Titov stresses that tsunamis are nothing like the gigantic surf break-style waves that most of us imagine. "It's a wave, but from the observer's point of view you can't recognize it as a wave," says Titov. "It's more like the ocean turning into a white river and flooding everything in its path."

If the currents don't pull you to the bottom when you're caught in raging waters, the debris is already there. “A certain number of people die in earthquakes, but many more are injured. "The tsunamis completely reversed," says Titov. "There are almost no injuries, because it is a disaster that is very difficult to survive."
Jose Borrero, a tsunami researcher at the University of Southern California and director of eCoast, explains that a major earthquake and tsunami in 2004 was so rare that devastating tsunamis were virtually unknown in the long cultural histories of India and Sri Lanka. The [Indian Ocean tsunami] made landfall in these places that had no natural warning because they were too far away to feel the earthquake," says Borrero. "With no natural warning, no official warning and no history of tsunamis, it's the perfect combination to hit crowded coastlines, causing so much death and destruction."
Both Borrero and Titov joined US Geological Survey expeditions in early 2005 to measure the exact extent of the tsunami that hit Sumatra. It was during these expeditions that scientists confirmed the maximum height of the waves of more than 131 feet on the northwestern tip of the island.
Borrero remembers arriving in a huge freighter loaded with overturned cement sacks with the propeller in the air. "This was the most extreme tsunami since 1960," Borrero says, referring to the 8.6-magnitude Chilean earthquake and tsunami that swept across the Pacific, including the destruction of Hilo, Hawaii, 15 hours after the quake.

Titov will never forget the scene of widespread destruction he witnessed in Sumatra, months after the tsunami waters receded. "We took a boat from the middle of the island to Banda Aceh, which was the hardest hit, and for hundreds of kilometers it was like someone took an eraser and erased everything below the 20-meter line," he says.
