As with any good task, the end result is not so important, but the interesting encounters along the way and the knowledge gained are important. Here the rabbit meets a bun, the moon, a whale and a volcano, all of whom give him suggestions for the perfect gift.
In addition to thoughtful interaction with strangers, the rabbit is brave and persistent, even if he eats part of the gift he finds - a carrot! Each of them offers the rabbit something he can easily do or acquire: the moon offers a "crescent smile", the whale offers a glass of water, etc. After all, Rabbit finds the perfect gift for Nana himself, and his Nana absolutely loves it. Although the story is somewhat predictable, it is entertaining—readers will laugh at the explosion of an anthropomorphic volcano and Rabbit's exhaustion on his journey, among other hilarious scenes.
Smith's plaster, oil and cold wash illustrations are beautiful and almost ethereal. The friendly creature with many eyes, which we call "sticker", is both scary and interesting. The moon is Tim Burton-esque and looks like it's glowing and jumping off the page. The rabbit is happy with his choice of gift and has a moon smile on his face.
