According to the National Retail Federation's annual holiday survey, gift cards were the most popular gift of the holiday season, with 46% of shoppers planning to buy an average of three to four cards this year. Holiday spending on gift cards is expected to reach $28.1 billion, up from $29.9 billion in 2018. And with supply chain issues, shipping delays and shortages, more cards are expected to be put into socks than in previous years. A Bankrate survey found that 29% of adults had at least one gift card expire, 27% lost at least one, and 21% lost it because a business closed permanently before using at least one card. It is important to verify that you are in the correct location before entering any information at the actual merchant or card site. If you're not careful, you can end up on a website that looks legitimate but can steal your gift card balance. Another way to check your balance is through shopping apps and some retailers like Target let you add gift cards to your app wallet. Amazon says you can view your gift card balance in your account. The balance will be saved when you use the gift card towards an order or add it to "Your Account" for a future purchase. Once you're logged into your account, select "Gift Cards" and view your gift card balance. According to Epic Games, an Epic Games account is required to use the V-Bucks Card code. According to Oculus, if you receive store credit, you can check your balance from the settings in the Oculus app. Before you can use credit, you'll need to add a payment method to your account. According to Roblox, gift cards can only be used in the browser and "cannot be used in Roblox apps." Note that the card can only be used at certain stores or locations. Fees: Some state laws prohibit service fees and expiration dates on store gift cards, but the rules are more stringent for cards issued in the credit card company's name. These cards are valid for at least five years and are not charged if not used within 12 months. Bonus Cards: Tis the season for holiday gift card promotions, when restaurants and stores offer bonuses with the purchase of gift cards. If you receive a bonus gift card, sometimes called bonus cash, most of it will expire. Check the terms. Protect the card: Some gift cards can be registered as a credit card on the websites listed on the card, which can protect them from theft or loss. Also, take a photo of the front and back of the card or write down the card details, as some companies will replace lost or stolen cards if you can provide the details.
